‘It was OK’: Giving useful feedback on presentations

Over the coming weeks the third year (Part II) students will be presenting their project work. In preparation for this I gave a talk about giving a talk. In each of the coming weeks each presenter will speak for 30 minutes and then we’ll give them feedback on how well they did.

Abstract: We all have to spend time sitting through presentations or
lectures. However, many people are seemingly unable to think
critically and constructively about what they see. I think that this
is an important skill. Firstly, it means that if someone asks you for
feedback (or to evaluate a job candidate) then you can say something
useful. Secondly, it gives you insights into improving your own
presenting and public speaking. In this talk I’ll work through ways
in which you can develop your thinking on what makes a compelling
presentation and also mechanisms to structure the feedback
process.
